For Parents
“There has been a lot of media coverage lately about the problems faced by LGBT youth, including a higher risk of suicide and attempted suicide. But what helps LGBT youth reduce such risks and increase the chances of a healthy adulthood? One key factor is being accepted by their families.”
– Dr. Caitlin Ryan, Marian Wright Edelman Institute at San Francisco State University
Out Youth works closely with Austin PFLAG to help parents find the support and education they need to support their LGBTQIA children.
The evidence is overwhelming and sensible. When LGBTQIA children have the unconditional love and support of their parents and families, they grow into happy, healthy adults. But parents do not have to go through this alone – we are here to help. Though our primary concern is for the well-being of LGBTQIA youth, parental support makes our job much easier, and helping parents is a key component of our overall work.
Out Youth hosts the Bring-Your-Loved-Ones Potluck from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. every second Sunday of the month. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about Out Youth and meet other parents. At 5:00 p.m., when youth programming starts, we encourage family members to meet at a local coffee shop for their own informal peer support group.
We also recommend that parents attend monthly Austin PFLAG meetings. PFLAG is a supportive community of parents, relatives and friends of LGBTQIA people who can understand what you may be going through. And if you are already a supportive parent, you might consider attending to provide guidance to those who are just starting their journey to understanding and acceptance.
