Health & Safer Sex
As part the KYSS (Knowing Your Status is Smart) program, Out Youth offers regular programs on sexual health, healthy relationships and safer sex.
Past workshops have focused on skills like building healthy relationships and friendships, communicating with sex partners, reducing the risk of contracting an STI/STD (sexually transmitted infection/sexually transmitted disease), reducing the risk of contracting or spreading HIV, using safer sex products (such as condoms and dental dams) and many other topics.
Safer sex training includes roleplaying, games, videos, group discussions and printed materials, all aimed at making our programs engaging, interactive and easy to understand. We often invite HIV-positive speakers to share their stories.
We know that one of the best ways young people can keep themselves disease-free is to learn accurate information about how infections are contracted and treated. Having good communication skills and self-esteem also are important for advocating for one’s self, whether it’s being active with a sex partner or when calling a clinic to get tested for STIs/STDs.
Trainings usually are presented 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on a Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday, although it is best to check the calendar to see when the next training will be held.
If you have questions or would like to request a safer sex training, please contact Monrovia Van Hoose, clinical director, at 512-419-1233.
